Do you believe that there is beauty and purpose in our brokenness?
In Jewish tradition, an alabaster box was filled with precious ointment that matched the family’s wealth. It was given to a young woman when she reached the age of maturity and was available for marriage. When asked in marriage, she would respond by breaking the alabaster box at his feet. She would anoint his feet in honor, and her answer was “yes.”
In our scripture verse, we meet “a woman” – no name, status, or reputation; but she had an alabaster jar with expensive perfume. She did not have a suitor but pursued Jesus and gave Him her most valuable and prized possession. She broke her jar and poured it ALL out at the Master’s feet. All she had was brought to the Master, and without hesitation, she poured it all out. My sister, what is in your alabaster box? What is hidden in your box? What have you been storing and carrying for years that you have never shared with anyone? What do you need to release to Jesus so He can make you over again?
She did not care what anyone thought about her sacrifice. She was probably tired of carrying it all alone, broken, lost, and tired…. she needed more, and she knew that she would find it in a surrendered relationship with Jesus. She no longer cared how she looked or what others thought of her and what she represented. She needed Jesus. Are you ready to live a poured-out life for Jesus? Are you ready to release everything without holding back, letting Jesus into the dark, secret places?
Come and join us for a weekend of reflection and searching as you take your alabaster box (with all your fears, dreams, desires, and brokenness), break it, and pour it ALL before Him. You will find that a sweet fragrance will rise once you break your alabaster box at Jesus’ feet and give Him all of your worship. You will find that you are never too broken that God cannot figure out how to put the shattered pieces back together. Only God can complete you and create something beautiful in us. A broken alabaster box will reveal your purpose, define your destiny, and lift you to where God wants you to be. She was the only one leaving the room, smelling the same way Jesus did.

I hope to see you there. S. Matthews, Director
